Historic Jobs - Worst Jobs for Children :: Number 3 - Mill house Scavenger

 Ideal for: Those with good eyesight, nimble fingers, and prior experience with brushes and brooms. Minimum age requirement of six years old.

 Job Specifications: Start your career early! A Manchester textile mill seeks eager, hardworking children to sweep the cotton that falls under the wheels of the weaving mules.

 Drawbacks: The pay isn’t great—er, actually, you don’t get paid. Whatever salary’s due you has been given, in bulk, to your parents, who have sold you off as slaves. But you do get bread and water, burnt porridge if you’re good, and maybe a bone on Christmas Day. That’s if you live to Christmas. The rapidly spinning machinery can cut off a limb, possibly your neck, although death may be more merciful than the daily beatings from supervisors. Don’t expect anything better after your 12-hour workday, either. Cramped and squalid living conditions, the lice-infested beds, and the total lack of any indoor heating are only slightly more bearable than running under rapidly rotating blades.

 Perks: None, absolutely none.
