Ideal for: anyone called Romeo or Juliet
Job Specifications: Theatre was not considered a
very respectable position in those days. While you enjoyed fame, fortune,
and the admiration of fans who gifted you with fine jewellery and expensive
perfumes, in the eyes of high society, you were little better than a
charlatan. Needless to say, you had very little even in terms of legal
rights. If your theatre manager decides to throw you out on the streets, you
can’t do much except pick yourself up and hope there’s an opening in the
corner pin factory.
Drawbacks: Long hours of practice and thick theatre makeup quickly
deteriorate your beauty, making you a has-been even before you step into
your late twenties. You have no job security, and given the limited career
options available for women at the time, your only hope is to snag a very
rich and very generous theatre patron before you become passé.
Perks: You earn more in one night than many women earn in their lifetime.
(Or if you are dreadful - get pelted with rotten fruit.)
