Ideal for: struggling students looking for room and
board
Job Specifications: An au pair is a glorified babysitter. You keep the
kids clean, happy, and out of trouble. This often involves long walks in the
park, watching a Barney video six times in a row, and bribing them with
chocolates.
Drawbacks: While you’re paid more money, because you’re in charge of
“educating” the child in the tradition of Mary Poppins and Maria Von Trapp,
it is not near enough for the grief you will get from being in charge of
Very Spoiled Rich Brats. They’re used to getting their own way, and
screaming if they don’t get it, and if you put your foot down your wards
will run back to their mothers and tell them that you locked them in the
basement. And while you are asked to tutor the kids and teach them good
manners, you are not allowed to hit them, scold them, or discipline them in
any way.
Perks: If things get tough you can always abscond with the family silver.
