Ideal for: intellectuals, philosophers and would be
shepards
Job specifications: You’re on scholarship, and part of your research grant
is to assist the faculty in their, er, academic programs. That could mean
anything from checking the essays of over 200 students who can neither
spell, or from the look of it, read, or spending so much time in the library
that your skin turns a pale white and you lose your ability to look at
direct sunlight.
Drawbacks: You do all the legwork—reading obtuse
academic texts, translating them into neat little index cards, interviewing
500 test subjects or documenting the research results into the wee hours of
the morning—while your boss puffs on his pipe and writes charming little
children’s stories in front of a blazing fire place.
Perks. Free coffee at the faculty lounge, and the promise of torturing
your own graduate assistant once you finish your Ph.D.
